Georgian Arts & Crafts Estate, Greenwich CT

Named “Three Oaks” by its original builder in the 1930s, this house stands in the center of 10 acres of mature landscape.

The challenge was to renovate and double the size of the existing house without any evidence of new work. The Georgianized Arts & Crafts style of the house depended upon the rustic nature of its materials to impart informality to the design. After an extensive search, a match for the original clinker brick was found, and roof slates, some of which are 2 inches thick and weigh up to 80 lbs. each, were quarried in Vermont. A gentle updating of the existing interiors was necessary, as was an addition to accommodate a larger family kitchen and breakfast room.
